Format: One to One Performance (2 Hours max) followed by 30 minute open viewing
A subtle body work that explores identity, visual judgement and
definition. Participants will be asked to transpose their visual
judgements directly onto the artists flesh. This will be followed by a
30 minute open viewing of the body.
'Define Me' experiments with the concept of identity as a fluid and
socially constructed concept.
Identity is often discussed as a fixed construct, as if there is an
inner essence of a person lying just beneath the skin. Western
philosopher Foucault rejects this idea, suggesting there is no such
thing as a 'real' identity within a person. Foucault believed that
'identity' is constructed and communicated to others in our
interactions with them and that this is a shifting, transient
construction.
By giving over responsibility for my identity I ask the viewer to
construct for me a completely new 'self' based purely on blind
judgement.
